93% Marvel's The Avengers

All Critics (269) | Top Critics (44) | Fresh (250) | Rotten (19) | DVD (3)

Never underestimate the entertainment value of the Hulk Smash.

If you are a Marvel fan, then The Avengers will feel like Christmas. Thanks to the merry doings of the director, Joss Whedon, all your favorite characters are here, as shiny and as tempting as presents under the tree.

Ultimately, it all comes back to Whedon: His clear vision for each character and how they might be profitably intermingled; his unexpected knack for action choreography; his funny, tender, immaculately constructed script.

A spectacle in the grandest sense of the word ...

Whedon, a pop-genre magician best known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is a master of viewer manipulation - because he never gives up his own seat in the crowd.

The performances are so well-pitched in The Avengers, meshing with such vividness and ease, that it's tempting to overpraise the good but not great movie that surrounds them.

Comic-book movie delivers the goods

By the time the utterly routine (and decidedly endless) finale rolls around, Marvel's The Avengers has unquestionably squandered the potential of its premise and its cast...

Delivers big time with everything longtime fans and newcomers alike could possibly want in a summer blockbuster that definitely surpasses the hype.

This too-long adventure is a sensory overload --- complete with loud, protracted battle scenes and hunky super heroes who provide the necessary eye candy. It's also very funny, and highly entertaining.

There is much humor laced throughout the film, giving it an air of not taking itself too seriously -- which is as it should be in a film of this genre.

The Avengers lives up to every last ounce of hype.

It's a blockbuster that manages to please with intelligence and fun. Whedon makes it look easy.

It's all very smoothly done but comes without a hint of surprise or revelation.

The Main Event is pretty much what you'd expect ? noisy, overlong, wall-to-wall CG effects and arcane superhero lore ... Yes, it's all fairly formulaic, but on a Wow! scale never before experienced.

If you only see one movie this year over and over again, it'll probably be this one.

I have a feeling that this will be a comfort film for myself and many other film geeks for years to come, just like the Indiana Jones or Star Wars movies.

Whedon delivers a thoroughly entertaining compilation of the best of these heroes while never hiding either his giddy love for the characters or the wry wit that has formed the bedrock of his career.

The Avengers will surely rank among the best superhero movies, if not summer blockbusters, of all time.

The Avengers is a fun time at the movies. That's as important as anything.

Whedon gives balance even to relative minnows Hawkeye and the Black Widow by giving each their moment to shine.

The real hero of The Avengers is not Iron Man, Thor or even Nick Fury. It's Joss Whedon.

There's also great chemistry between the principals, who all get their moment in the sun.

The Avengers greatest accomplishment could be this: its ability to make an entire audience feel like children reading their favorite comic for the very first time.

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) ? A gunman looking for someone he believed owed him money shot himself inside an Indiana real estate office several hours after releasing hostages Friday, and he died after being rushed to a hospital, police said.

Two loud bangs were heard Friday afternoon before SWAT team members rushed into the Prudential Executive Group Real Estate office in Valparaiso, where police said the gunman had holed up.

"He has some history here, but we believe he's from out of state," said Valparaiso Police Chief Michael Brickner, who declined to release the man's name.

Prudential accountant Carolyn Biesen said she was in her office around 10 a.m. when she heard a commotion near the front desk and then a thud, which she was told was the gunman hitting the marketing manager and knocking her down.

She walked out of her office, saw a man who looked agitated and told him to leave.

"That's when he pulled his gun out ? and pointed it in the air," she told The Associated Press late Friday.

She slowly retreated back into her office, locked it, shoved a file cabinet in front of the door and called 911 and her husband. Curled up under her desk, she heard two gun shots, then a series of shots. She later heard officers yelling at the man to come out.

"It was scary. But I was thinking about my loved ones," she said.

Police received a 911 call around the same time reporting that a man with a gun had entered the brokerage office. Sgt. Michael Grennes said there was a "brief exchange of gunfire" when officers arrived.

Brickner said officers believe the gunman shot himself twice in the head before SWAT members entered the building. Police said the man was rushed to a hospital but died Friday evening.

Grennes said there were fewer than 10 people in the building when the incident began, and the last two hostages were released unharmed after 3 p.m.

No hostages reported being shot, though Grennes said one person who was struck in the head was treated and released from a hospital.

Another witness, Randy Baker, said he was in an adjacent parking lot shoveling asphalt when an officer wielding a pistol suddenly ran by and asked if he'd seen or heard anything about a gun. When Baker said he hadn't, the officer approached the Prudential building.

Seconds later, the officer began firing at least half a dozen times in rapid succession, he said.

"It was like boom, boom, boom, boom," Baker said.

After jumping behind his B&G Seal Coating truck when the firing began, Baker peeked slowly around and saw a woman through a Prudential window ? cowering under an office desk.

"That's what really scared me," Baker said. "And I ran out of there fast."

SWAT team members broke windows in the building and stormed inside less than two hours after the last hostages were released.

Mack Elliott, an agent at the brokerage, wasn't in the office at the time but said he spoke with agents who were there and believed the incident stemmed from a dispute over a real estate transaction.

Biesen, the accountant, said she didn't believe the gunman intended to hurt her.

"If he wanted to, he could have come right into the office ? maybe shooting through the door," she said Friday evening from her home, where she gathered with relatives, neighbors and friends.

She said she felt sorry for the gunman, noting that he could have decided to leave the office after all the hostages were released.

"It's very sad," she said.

Subtropical Storm Beryl forms off S.C. coast

Subtropical Storm Beryl formed off the South Carolina coast on Friday and forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm warning for parts of the Southeastern U.S. coast.

Beryl had top sustained winds of 45 miles per hour and was in the Atlantic about 305 miles east of Charleston, South Carolina, the Miami-based center said.

Beryl is not expected to threaten oil and gas drilling or production. The storm is forecast to eventually turn back toward the Atlantic and away from the Gulf of Mexico, where U.S. oil and gas operations are clustered.

Story: Bud weakens to tropical storm, nears Puerto Vallarta

Subtropical storms usually have a broader wind field than tropical storms and their shower and thunderstorm activity is more removed from the storm's center.

A tropical storm warning was issued for an area stretching from northeast Florida to South Carolina. The warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within the area over the next 36 hours.

Story: US: 4-8 Atlantic hurricanes expected this season

Beryl was moving north but expected to veer west-southwest or southwest on Saturday, the hurricane center said. The storm's center is expected to be near or over the Southeastern U.S. coast on Sunday, it said.

Beryl is the second named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which officially runs from June 1 to November 30, although it is not uncommon for storms to form outside that time frame.

'Mob Wives' Drita And Carla Read 'Fifty Shades Of Grey'

'What is this? This is dirty!' Drita D'Avanzo exclaims after reciting a passage of 'Fifty Shades' for MTV News.

Filth or sensual fan fiction? It's impossible not to have an opinion on E L James' erotic New York Times best-seller "Fifty Shades of Grey." Single ladies, girlfriends and housewives have all been drawn to the steamy novel — not to mention "Mob Wives." VH1 reality star Carla Facciolo hasn't read the current "it" book, but she gets the gist of it.

"To me, it's like a sex book," she told MTV News in an attempt to describe the "50 Shades" phenomenon. "Grey is a guy that every girl wants; he's like a dream guy and he seduces."

Carla's synopsis was enough to whet the appetite of her "Mob Wives" pal Drita D'Avanzo, who immediately let her curiosity get the best of her. "I wanna read it," Drita blurted out.

Lucky for the reality-show beauty, MTV News had a copy of the book on hand for her to sample. "It's very intense," Carla warned.

Still, Drita opened the book and began her moment of "Fifty Shades" discovery. "Get off the bed, stand over here," D'Avanzo read from one of the book's later chapters, in which playboy Christian Grey introduces his naive lover Anastasia Steele to a kinky sexual experience. "He holds out his hand and in his palm are two shiny balls linked with a thick, black thread," Drita continued to read before she stopped herself, shocked by the sexual suggestiveness.

"What the f--- is this?" Drita questioned in her unmistakable Staten Island, New York, accent. "They're ass beads? What is this? This is dirty — what the hell is this?"

"Fifty Shades" wasn't Drita's cup of tea, but maybe she will change her mind when the book is adapted into a film (Universal Pictures has already secured the rights). "How do you even know about this, Carla?" she asked, chastising her buddy. "You, for even knowing about that book, I gotta think twice about you."

Carla had only one reasonable explanation: "It's the hottest book out right now."

Absolutely nothing is unusual about bowel irregularity in most dogs soon after surgical procedures. Samsung Omina M stops off at the FCC, Europeans pine for the Focus 2

Image

Samsung's Euro-centric Omina M has finished its mandated saunter through the FCC. The Windows Phone for the old country will sport a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 1GHz processor -- while the test documents reveal that it'll only carry a GSM and 3G radio, leaving the lucky few with LTE out in the cold. Now that it's passed the regulatory hurdle of being allowed into the US, we can hope that the company will soon start talking about when we can get our hands on one.

Devils outlast Rangers, 5-3, take 3-2 series lead

NEW YORK (AP) ? The New Jersey Devils never could have imagined they would have a three-goal lead on the New York Rangers less than 10 minutes into Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals at hostile Madison Square Garden.

Their shock was even greater when that advantage was gone, and they were suddenly locked in a tie game in the opening minute of the third period.

In the end, it all worked out for the Devils, who got another surprising goal from fourth-line forward Ryan Carter in the closing minutes and escaped with a win that put New Jersey on the brink of a spot in the Stanley Cup finals.

Carter's third goal of the playoffs with 4:24 remaining was the difference in the Devils' 5-3 victory over New York on Wednesday night. The Devils have a 3-2 edge in the series, but if the top-seeded Rangers can stay alive on Friday night in New Jersey, Game 7 would be back in Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

"It's a good feeling," goalie Martin Brodeur said of the Devils' status. "We worked really hard to get in that position. (There's been) a lot of unsung heroes and guys producing at different times. Players are playing well. We've just got to keep going.

"Nothing is done yet."

If the Rangers fall short, their best season in years will come to a crashing end and the Devils will move on to face the Western champion Los Angeles Kings. New York hasn't been to the finals since 1994, when the Rangers knocked out New Jersey in the semis and then beat Vancouver for the title.

The Devils are one win away from playing for the Cup one season after their run of 13 straight postseason appearances was snapped. New Jersey went to the finals four times between 1995 and 2003 and won three championships.

"It's a great position to be in," Devils forward Patrik Elias said. "Hopefully, we can play a better game at home. Hopefully, we'll be the team that dictates the energy and the pace out there."

When Travis Zajac scored 9:49 in to make it 3-0, the Devils seemed ready to cruise to victory. But the Rangers roared back and appeared to have every bit of the momentum.

Then the game, and perhaps the entire series, changed in the blink of an eye when Carter put the Devils in front to stay. Zach Parise added an empty-net goal to make sure the Rangers had no chance for another comeback.

Carter had only four goals and four assists in 72 regular-season games with Florida and New Jersey. He has two goals in the East finals.

"They've been great the whole playoffs," Elias said of the fourth line. "It's not always the top guys who win you hockey games."

Stephen Gionta and Elias scored within the first 4:13 before Zajac made it 3-0. Then the Rangers woke up.

Brandon Prust brought New York within 3-1 before the first period was over, and Ryan Callahan made it a one-goal game in the first minute of the second. The Garden really rocked when Marian Gaborik tied it at 3 just 17 seconds into the third.

But the comeback was for naught.

"We probably played our best game of the series," Rangers coach John Tortorella said.

Once Gaborik tied it with an unassisted goal that ricocheted in off Brodeur's skate, it appeared the Rangers would ride the comeback all the way to one of the most stirring wins in team history ? one that would rival victories over New Jersey in the classic 1994 East finals when the Rangers erased a 3-2 series hole behind Mark Messier's guarantee.

Carter made sure it wouldn't happen.

"You have to (keep it together) this time of year," Gionta said. "You have to have a short memory. Fortunately we did and came out with the victory."

New Jersey was outshot 28-17 overall and had only six shots in the third period, but two went in.

Brodeur, the backbone of every New Jersey title, kept his focus throughout the third when he was loudly taunted with chants of "Mar-ty, Mar-ty" after New York got even.

"It was a mistake," Brodeur said of Gaborik's goal. "I'm pretty happy that the boys bounced back and made this a win for us. It would have been tough and people would have blamed that mishandle."

The Rangers were ultimately done in by another terrible start. They had been on a pattern of win-one, lose-one, but now they are on the verge of elimination with their second two-game losing streak in a series this year.

The only time the Rangers have won two straight in a playoff series this postseason is when they overcame a 3-2 hole in the first round and knocked out Ottawa.

"We have to bring all the good things we did and keep doing them in the next game," Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist said. "We played really well in the second and third period."

They couldn't say the same about the first.

"It's different when you go down 3-0. You don't have a whole lot to lose," Rangers forward Brian Boyle said. "It was good nonetheless. Now it's 3-2. Now we have to win two. That's the bottom line."

The Rangers burned their timeout early, and Devils coach Peter DeBoer spent his with 10:17 left. Parise implored his teammates on the bench ? "Come on boys!" ? and the messages from the coach and the captain did the trick.

"It wasn't pretty by any means," Parise said. "But we're going home with a 3-2 lead."

Not only didn't the Rangers have the strong start they craved and insisted they needed, they were practically run out of their building.

The same problems that plagued New York in its 4-1 loss in Game 4, when the Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, cropped up again in front of the frustrated fans.

Gionta got the Devils going 2:43 in, and Elias made it 2-0 1:30 later on New Jersey's fourth shot.

Tortorella used his timeout, but it made little difference. He appeared to be calm as he moved back and forth behind the bench while talking to his players. Whatever the message was it didn't sink in.

The Devils shrugged off a few scoring chances by the Rangers, and padded their lead again.

Just 5:26 after Elias' goal, Zajac made it 3-0 with his seventh of the playoffs. Zajac got a clean shot from just inside the right circle that beat Lundqvist inside the left post.

The tide began to turn the Rangers' way, and they allowed only one shot the rest of the period.

Prust, making his return following a one-game suspension for an elbow he delivered to the head of Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov in Game 3, showed off a bit of scoring touch when he converted on a breakaway with 4:19 left in the first to make it 3-1.

The Rangers outshot the Devils 9-6 in the lopsided period, but continued their sudden defensive dominance well into the second. Then they cut the Devils' lead to a goal just 32 seconds into the second.

New Jersey didn't record its first shot of the period, and its second since its third goal, until Adam Henrique put a puck in on Lundqvist at 6:23.

Lundqvist, who had stopped 94 percent of the shots he faced in the playoffs before Wednesday, made just 12 saves. The Rangers allowed five goals one game after giving up four for the first time in this postseason.

To make the finals, New York will have to win a third consecutive seven-game series.

"We have to have a short memory," Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh said. "We've been in this position before in this playoffs and we found a way to get it done. We don't want to look ahead. We have to win two games, but we just have to focus on winning one."

Notes: Brandon Dubinsky had been sidelined since he was injured in the Rangers' victory over Ottawa in Game 7 of the first round. He sat out all seven games of the second round against Washington and the first four against New Jersey. John Mitchell was scratched to make room in the lineup. Prust's return forced D Steve Eminger to sit out after he played the two previous games. ... Ilya Kovalchuk has 10 assists in the playoffs. ... Prust scored his first career NHL playoff goal in his 23rd game.
